Winter Season

saBEE, 17 Apr ’2615 May ’26

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.
— Rainer Maria Rilke

Our winter season started in October 2025.

A medical scan scheduled for MAO in Detroit was completed on the way to Naples. The scan revealed a few things: one related to the prostate cancer he has been living with since 2017, and another that was uncertain and needed further investigation.

MAO has had daily conversations with the robot about his prostate cancer and has followed the latest developments in treatment for years. Seeing the reported evidence of prostate cells, he contacted radiologists to pursue a focused and appropriate treatment plan.

The plan was five treatments. By early December, he had completed his final treatment. That same day, he received the biopsy result showing a tumor on his liver — a different cancer.

Over the next few months, there were appointments with oncologists and surgical oncologists. A tumor board of twelve professionals reviewed his case to determine the best path forward for his situation of having two Stage 4 cancers. There were so many appointments: doctors, CT scans, PET scans, blood draws, more waiting, more information, more uncertainty.

It is strange to think back on those months now. There was so much uncertainty, and yet there was always a continual movement forward.

He amazes me every day with his ability to keep going — one foot in front of the other, through all things. He never stopped working on the business. He never stopped working on his health. He kept showing up.

A few weeks after surgery to remove the tumor, he had a Signatera blood test. The test looks for circulating tumor DNA in the blood and helps determine the urgency of next steps. In our case, the next step would have been chemotherapy.

Today, we received the result: the best possible result.

Zero.

We know there will be more tests in the future. We know this path is not finished. But today, we can celebrate a great result.

Grateful today for all the friends and family who supported us, and who waited with me while he was in surgery.

Grateful for the incredible professionals and technology available to us through Lee Health, Florida Cancer Specialists, and Moffitt Cancer Center.

And grateful for my MAO — for his resilience, his courage, and his extraordinary go-forward attitude.
