Friendship is the gold thread that ties the heart of all the world. – John Evelyn
This year marks our fifth spring in Galena.
Every one of those years, we have had wonderful times at Pine Hollow Inn with the Mathys. I always look forward to this spring getaway.
Since we had been in Chicago for a few days, getting to Galena meant a road trip. While we would have happily rented a car, the Mathys generously drove us (and all our stuff) to Galena, then back to Chicago on Sunday morning so we could catch our flight at O’Hare. WE are so grateful for our friendship with these fantastic people.
Our time in Galena was wonderful. There were daily fires, bird listening (23 birds heard in 20 minutes!), deer sightings, puzzle time by the fire and the pleasure of being tucked into the black walnut grove. It is always a treat to see Larry, the owner, and his dogs, Oliver and Jack.
We had a nice day adventure out to Horseshoe Mound Preserve, followed by lunch in Shullsburg, Wisconsin. We had hoped to see cheese making in action, but there was no activity on Sunday.
Great meals were made and shared at the inn: pizza, brats, steak burgers, chicken wings, Puerto Rican Chicano stew and a steak dinner. And, of course, our annual brunch at Otto’s was delicious. Absolutely love their pop tarts!
Grateful for the leisurely catch-up over many days, for all the great meals and adventures shared, and for our annual spring getaway.
