Visibility is not the same as power, but it is a start. – Min Jin Lee
It’s a different world today for my nephews and niece than it was when I was growing up. Growing up I needed to differentiate myself from other East Asians – Chinese and Japanese in particular.
I’m KOREAN!
At the same time, I was trying to fit into the white western world.
My parents were quite strict about TV watching – only allowed on weekends.
When weekends came around, I watched as much of it as I could. The only Asian young woman I remember seeing was the Japanese girl on Karate Kid. I was in complete awe when I saw her – so beautiful.
I am so grateful today for all the asian diversity that I see in the media, in sports and entertainment, the authors and musicians, the chefs etc. In fact, it’s a little overwhelming trying to keep up with it all.
This morning I am grateful
that my nephews and niece are growing up in this environment,
for watching Fresh off the Boat with them 2 summers ago (they finished it on their own!)
and for all those who celebrate Asian representation.
